Blepharoptosis

Eyelid ptosis or “Blepharoptosis”, also “droopy eyes” is in common language a drop in upper eyelid normal position. This condition can be limited to one eye or can involve both eyes. Special skill, accurate understanding of delicate eyelid structures and precision are essential to a ptosis surgery.

Facial spasms (perceived by some as facial tics) that Dr. Akruti Desai treats commonly are:

 i) Benign essential blepharospasm (BEB)

Hemifacial spasms:

What are my treatment options: Once any specific mass pressing the nerve is ruled out, Botulinum toxin injection is the first line of management. It is an office procedure and requires less than 15 minutes depending on the extent of involvement. Relief from spasms is obtained for 3-4 months after which a repeat injection is required for persistent relief. An individual can choose to re-visit the clinic at his convenience:3-4 months interval or more. Oculoplasty specialists are adept at treating these.

Additional investigation like an MRI (Magnetic resonance Imaging) may be asked for by the doctor to look for a dilated vessel compressing the facial nerve in certain cases. Microvascular surgical decompression can possibly give long-term results in some such cases.
